Pioneer cemeteries are also scattered throughout the region. According to Iowa Code 5231, a pioneer cemetery has had six or fewer burials in the last 50 years. Many other cemeteries, though not defined as Pioneer Cemeteries, have been around for more than a century and include important history. Each cemetery, like each individual person interred there, has a unique story to tell.
The Western Iowa Pioneer Cemetery Association (WIPCA) is a group of volunteers working to preserve Pioneer and abandoned cemeteries in several Western Iowa counties.
